Sherlock Holmes and Sex

Well, what are you looking at? Don’t tell me you haven’t thought about it. I decided to include this controversial article, because against my will I am constantly confronted with this question. It’s probably my fault really, because the bag with this uncalled for question burst open after the publication of the double page from my comic book of the Hound of the Baskervilles, where I made a joke on the subject. As a result my website has been inundated with nosy questions such as: “Were Holmes and Watson lovers?”, which I’ve been deleting ever since, because I‘m of the opinion it doesn’t belong there.

Even though I am not, and never will be, an orthodox Holmesologist, I can declare that I know the correct and one hundred percent truthful answer to this question. Yes, you will finally get the straight and non-evasive answer to this question! But, let’s promise ourselves one thing. We will never return to this subject again!

The answer, though very simple, would not be complete without a short preface. Just like in the genius Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, one needs to ask the correct question to get the correct answer. And those, my dear friends, are two questions!

It is because love and sex are two different things and those, under the influence of modern society that insist otherwise, know nothing about life. Let me first explain the difference. Sex is the spice of love, not its essence. And so by applying this point of view, love is a juicy steak and sex is the mustard or ketchup, whichever ever you prefer. The point is that you can live on very fine steak, but it is much better with the spices that ensure an explosion of flavours on your tongue. On the other hand, you can live your entire life just on spices alone. Only that although you can eat them as often as you like, it will not fill you up. Steak, on the other hand, will. (For the pedants: Terry Pratchett used a similar comparison in his book Making Money, although he meant it differently).

So the first question is: Did Holmes and Watson truly love each other?

The answer is YES! Their love was the deepest and the most genuine. In almost every story, Watson suggests his affection for his friend, and although not as obvious, even Sherlock proved this several times with very eloquent gestures. You see, I’m no rocket scientist or expert, but I’m convinced, that affection or emotional affection, depending on how you want to call it, is a matter of the same part of the brain that is also responsible for motherly love, love between lovers or friends of any gender. Sex has nothing to do with it! Yes, you can have exactly the same feeling of love towards your mother, friend, child, brother, lover, pet, God…and, yes…a thing. There’s nothing wrong with any of it. It is important to understand that it is the same and it depends on your personal scale of values, what it is you choose and what is important to you.
