Auction sites

Auction sites may not immediately come to mind as resources for researching LGBTQIA+ history, however useful information can be found. As with almost everything, there is a Wikipedia page covering ‘Online Auction Websites’, but it is not fully comprehensive. Better results can be found by doing an internet search for ‘best online auction sites’ or similar. Familiar names will appear, such as eBay, Etsy, eBid, Delcampe and others.

Research tips on auction and sales sites often include advice to include words commonly misspelt, such as ‘lesbain’ instead of ‘lesbian’. Trying alternative spellings can reveal items bypassed by those who only use correct spellings, and bargains can be acquired. However, with the widespread use of free grammar checking apps, bargains based on misspelt words are harder to find – but it is still worth trying.

Often auction site keyword(s) searches only return hits based on terms included by the vendor in the metadata. To ensure that item descriptions are also searched, look for additional search options, such as ‘include description’ or ‘title and description’ tick boxes provided on some sites.

Boolean commands have some use. Unfortunately, however, searching is blighted by the marketing ploy of tagging anything and everything possible as ‘gay interest’ – even a pink coloured washing line may be tagged ‘gay interest’.

Examples included here are predominantly from eBay, as it produced the best results. Given the rapid turnover of items on auction sites, however, items of interest can appear elsewhere.
