Eva made pasta in her small cottage and enjoyed a glass of red wine with it. Then, as evening neared, she prepared herself to go back to the main area of the bed-and-breakfast to have a talk with Tim. He’d left a note at the front desk that afternoon promising a chat but not until seven that evening. Jake had taken the message, mentioning the man had left it on his way out. So he hadn’t stayed put like he’d said?

What did he have to say?

As she pulled her sweater back on, along with her scarf for extra warmth, a pounding came to her door. She rushed toward it and pulled it open to reveal Paz. His natural tanned complexion looked white, and she wondered what was wrong.

“Paz? What is it?”

“I—there’s a—there is a man in the pool.”

At first, Eva wasn’t sure what that had to do with her. They kept the pool heated in the winter months and nice and chilly in the summer, but no one tended to swim this close to Christmas. At least not at night.

“In the pool? What do you mean?” she said, asking for clarification.

“Yes. Please, come quick.” His tone made it clear he didn’t mean the man was swimming.

Eva rushed out of her cottage to the edge of the pool. What she saw there froze her thoroughly. Tim Banks lay face down in the water, and he wasn’t moving.

“My phone.” She threw a hand back toward her small apartment and Paz rushed in, coming back seconds later with her phone. “Quick, try to reach him with the pool net.”

Paz understood as she put in the call to 9-1-1 then waited as Paz maneuvered the body toward the side of the pool. The limbs looked stiff, something Eva mentally took note of.

When she was put through to the dispatcher and explained her situation, the woman on the other end assured her that they’d send an ambulance and a detective within minutes. Eva was asked to stay on the line, but she knelt next to the edge of the pool when Tim’s body was close enough. She wanted to reach for a pulse, though she knew there wouldn’t be one.

She shook her head and Paz crossed himself, uttering a prayer in Spanish. Then they waited. It felt much longer than it actually took for the ambulance to get there, but soon two men and a woman came rushing along the path at the side of the house.

They slowed when she shook her head, meaning he was gone, but they went about their job. Moments later, Jerome came around the side of the house.

“Eva, what’s going on?”

“I—well, Paz found him in the water. I—I don’t know.”

He looked over at the body. “Who?”

“A guest named Tim Banks. A software engineer from Texas.” The details felt trivial, but it was all she had.
