âSonofabitch!â Rabbit jerked his pistol and took aim at it.
Boom! Whap! The bullet tore into the flesh of one paw, spraying dark liquid into a crimson bloom. The creature squealed and both arms disappeared back through the bars in the blink of an eye. The squealing and panting grew fainter.
âI think itâs backing away,â he said to Hank.
Hank stood, frowning down at his bootless foot. âThat didnât look like no Bahkauv.â
âNope.â It didnât sound like one either, and this fuckerâs arms were scaly, not covered in black fur.
Inside the dark adit they heard the scritch-scritch-scritch of claws on rock.
âOh, shit,â Hank said right before the beast crashed into the gate again with enough force to bend the iron bars outward. Metal shrieked against metal. The chain snapped taut against the lock.
The huffing sounds from inside faded into the darkness again, but didnât go away entirely.
Rabbit tilted his head, hearing heavy, raspy panting. âFuckerâs still there,â he whispered. âTrying to break through is what heâs doinâ. He almost broke that lock. See?â
The lock still held, but had been stretched and twisted out of shape by the chain.
Rabbitâs heart galloped in his chest. âI donât think that thing will take another hit.â
âAinât no good runninâ, then. Missinâ my boot, anyhow.â Hank raised his pistol and waited. âReady?â
Rabbit was one step ahead of him, his pistol cocked and aimed. âSure wish I had my Sharps or Boss. Come on, you bastard.â
On cue, the creature rushed out of the darkness and crashed into the gate again, both arms reaching, claws swinging, yellow eyes bulging as it pushed against the bars.
Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Clickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclick â¦
âJack Rabbit! Yer out!â
âSo are you!â
The creature squealed long and high, reminding Rabbit of hog killing time at the ranch. It retreated into the darkness again, still squealing.
The gate creaked open a few inches as the chain clanged and clanked, link by link, to the ground.
Rabbit shared a wide-eyed look with Hank, and then they both began to reload as quick as their fingers could work.
âHe donât know he broke through, does he?â Hank finished loading and spun the cylinder.
Rabbitâs gun was pointing and waiting. âStand and fight?â His gaze darted between Hank and the open gate.
A shriek echoed out from the darkness.
âRUUUUUN!!!â they yelled at the same time and raced through the snow over the edge of the tailings toward Fred and Dime.
