How Did Jesus Preach?

Our best model for this (and everything else!) is Jesus. Jesus’ parables are contextual. They are drawn from the daily lives of the people who were listening. Imagine Jesus smiling at the new bride and groom sitting on the hillside as he tells a story of a wedding banquet. Imagine him catching the eye of a finicky homemaker as he talks about a woman who loses a coin in her house. Imagine Jesus spotting the baker as he talks about yeast, or the angler as he speaks about fish, or the shepherd as he teaches about that one lost sheep.

Jesus knew his hearers—so well, in fact, that it sometimes alarmed them (e.g., to Nathanel: “I saw you under the fig tree” [Jn 1:48], and to the woman at the well: “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband” [Jn 4:17-18]). When Jesus preached, he preached about the lives of the people before him. Often the immediate issues of their lives prompted a parable, especially in the Gospel of Luke:

But wanting to justify himself, [the lawyer] asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers.” (Lk 10:29-30)
