Chapter Seven

Enzo had just got out of the shower and was in front of the bathroom mirror shaving with a towel around his waist when Haley stuck her head into the room.

“Got a second, hun?”

“Sure.” He gestured for her to come in as he rinsed off his razor under the tap. She was already dressed up in blue jeans and a fancy flannel shirt for her dancing date with Rachelle. They’d been taking line dancing lessons the last few weeks. She even had her cowboy boots on, a sight he’d never thought he’d witness, since Haley was a city girl thru and thru. “What’s up, Hal?”

“I just wanted to chat while little ears weren’t around.” She shoved her hands into the front pockets of her jeans as she leaned back against the counter next to him.

Worry pooled in his stomach. Their daughter was spending the night with Haley’s parents, which he’d thought was great because it allowed him to take Lucy to the Serendipity club while Haley went out with her girl-friend. “Okay, what’s wrong?”

He tried not to sound defensive, but Haley had a way of springing unpleasant things on him while their daughter was occupied elsewhere. It was great that Haley refused to fight in front of Sophia, but it made the times she was gone a bit tense as he was always expecting a confrontation shortly after their daughter left.

“Nothing earth shattering, but I think we need to talk about our living situation.”

“What about it?” In truth it was Haley’s name on the lease of the duplex they lived in, but they’d come to an agreement when he’d moved back in with her - he paid half the bills and helped out with their daughter - terms he could definitely live with since it allowed him to be a full-time dad.

“This thing between you and Lucy is serious, right?” She shifted against the counter, crossing her feet at the ankles. “I mean, you’ve been spending a lot of time with her on the weekends Soph isn’t here. I know we both agreed to not bring home our significant others for overnight stays, which made sense at the time, but that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t know about serious ones.”

“Where are you going with this?” He’d thought it was the best for Sophia when he’d agreed to the no sleepover stipulation. He wasn’t about to parade women in and out of his daughter’s life any more than he wanted Haley to do the same. “Is this thing with Rachelle serious enough to revisit the topic? I don’t have an issue with you introducing your girl-friend to our daughter. She should know who’s important in her momma’s life.”

“Which I appreciate, but this doesn’t have to do with Rachelle. She’s still not ready to come out the closet; and until she does, she’s not meeting Soph. I’m not gonna expose our daughter to a person who has to hide who she is to be accepted by her family. I did that for too long myself, and I don’t want Soph thinking it’s normal to hide.
