Chapter 23
-Past-
âAre you ready?â Lady Minerva asked.
Odette turned; her hair was piled on top of her head and her dress a deep purple. She was fourteen and already to be presented amongst the women. Her debut wouldnât happen until sixteen, but it was not uncommon for a maternal figure to introduce a young lady into society early. This was particularly true during the early or late season when some members of high society were not in residence.
âI believe I am.â Odette felt like a goddess in the heavy fabric and the pearls at her throat.
âYou are more than ready.â Lady Minerva took Odetteâs hands and gracefully moved with her across the room. âYou are a vision of grace and beauty.â
Odette felt warm as she touched a hand to her cheek. âGrandmother!â
âBut I believe something is missing,â Lady Minerva said, before waving a servant over.
Odette glanced down, expecting to see something out of place. âWhat is it?â
Her grandmother opened a box and within were hairpins set with amethyst and pearls. âThe final accent so that everyone knows you are a Wolverson.â
Odette felt tears form and had to wave her hands to try and dry them. Without hesitation, her grandmother put the pins into her hair, setting them at the front and left side of her bun. Her grandmother kissed the top of her head, before framing her face with her gloved hands.
âYou have surpassed every expectation,â Lady Minerva said as the servants brought their cloaks. âRemember, above all else, you are a Wolverson.â
âThank you, Grandmother.â Odette kissed her cheek. âI will honor the Wolverson name.â
They exited the manor and went towards the carriage. Odette waited for her grandmother to enter when suddenly the older woman swayed. Odetteâs arms went around the older woman as Lady Minerva shook her head.
âGrandmother?â Odette asked as people surged around them. âWhatâs wrong?â
âI was suddenly lightheaded.â Lady Minerva rightened herself out of Odetteâs arms, waving off those around her. âExcitement and not enough lunch, I am sure. We must leave or weâll be late.â
âWe should cancel,â Odette said, fear overtaking her. âCall a physician.â
âYouâre overreacting. We shall do no such thing,â Lady Minerva said, patting her hand.
âAt least eat something in the carriage,â Odette insisted, feeling helpless in the face of her grandmotherâs determination.
âVery well,â she consented, as a maid hurried to comply. âBut we mustnât delay a moment longer.â
Despite the slight interruption they arrived at a fashionable time. Her grandmother had eaten and seemed better than she had earlier. She tried to focus on the coming dinner party, but her grandmotherâs dizzy spell weighed heavy on her mind. However, when Lady Minerva emerged from the carriage, she was regal. The house seemed to glow with light as they entered. The entrance had a small line with a man making announcements. She fished their introduction card from her bag.
âThe honorable dowager Duchess Wolverson and her granddaughter the Lady Odette Wolverson.â All heads turned in their direction and Odette tried to remember to breathe.
They entered a hall that was packed with people.
