Apparently the rumors were so convincing that the entire countryside believed them, men and women waiting for the fall of Rangoon in anticipation of a return to the old ways. âLies,â Hiraoka spat in disgust. âYou must not believe such horrid things. These rumors are designed to scare people into submission. If Dr. Ba Maw were dead, the whole world would know about it.â
