Chapter Five

The shower is welcomed. I’m not cold anymore, but the hot water is still good for my skin. I prolong it for as long as I can. However, the steam makes my eyes sting, and I’m getting sleepy. Good, I need a good healthy rest.

When I get out, wrapped in a towel, Adam is lying on the bed watching TV. He’s wearing jeans and a simple black t-shirt, the white sweater nicely folded on the chair beside the window. I thought he was still out. He went to buy something.

“Oh, I didn’t know you’re back,” I say. I’m not wearing my glasses, so he’s all blurry. “Um... I just need,” I point to the bag on the floor.

Adam doesn’t reply, but I can feel his eyes on me as I bend to look for my pajamas. I hold on tight onto the towel, searching my bag. But without my glasses I can’t find them, so I get up and retrieve my glasses from the nightstand next to my side of the bed.

“Have you ever thought about wearing lentils?” Adam asks.

Ah, there it is. I’ve heard it all before.

You look so much better without those glasses.

Why don’t you at least buy a more feminine pair of glasses?

They’re really big and hide your face. Such a shame.

“Sure. I already have a pair, but I’m not comfortable with them,” I say, trying to keep my spine straight, as I wipe them with a special cloth I keep in their case.

I am not ashamed of my glasses. Whoever thinks I should use lentils or buy another, more elegant pair, can kiss my ass! Yes, I wanna look pretty too, but girls with glasses can be pretty. Plus, we’re usually smarter than the disapproving ones.

“Oh, I haven’t thought of that. I only thought it would be easier for you. I assume the lentils don’t get steamy or need wiping. However, if they’re hurting your beautiful eyes, it’s not worth it.”

I stop mid-wiping—it takes me longer when I’m only using one hand—and turn toward him in wonder. “My thoughts exactly.” Then I remember his words. “You think I have beautiful eyes?”

“Yes. What color are they anyway? The light reflecting in the glasses made it difficult for me to see them. Now I’m seeing them close up, but I still can’t tell their color.” He sounds puzzled. “Sometimes they’re green, sometimes they’re blue... I’ve never seen eyes like yours before.”

Shrugging, I put my glasses on and watch him. Finally, he’s clear. His face is puzzled too like his voice. On the bed next to him, there’s a bar of chocolate lying on its wrapping and two oranges.

“We already had dessert,” I say, my indignation forgotten.

All I can feel now is his gaze traveling all the naked parts of my body. His eyes are dark and intense. A lock of his raven hair falls on his forehead. He’s so damn sexy!

“We had.”

I grin. “Then what’s that?” I point at the chocolate as I go back to search for my pajamas.
