Kyle returned to Cleveland the last week of March. He felt very good about this latest trip to L.A. He’d leased the perfect office space and started the ball rolling to find an office manager with an estimated start date of June 15.

He’d also called on several leads and a couple of those looked promising for future business. All in all; a very satisfying trip.

He’d missed Rebecca, though, and felt ridiculously happy about seeing her again. On the flight back, he wondered if she’d have any news for him. For her sake, he hoped she was pregnant. For his sake, he wasn’t sure what he hoped.

He got to the office early the next morning. At 8:10, following his normal pattern, he got up, went to the kitchenette, filled his coffee mug, then headed for Rebecca’s office. She didn’t hear his approach, so he had a chance to study her for a moment without her being aware of his scrutiny. She looked exactly right, as always, in a trim burgundy wool suit and pale blue blouse. Her head was bent over her work.

He knocked softly.

“Kyle,” she said, looking up with a smile. “You’re back.”

“Yeah, got back last night.”

“Come in. Close the door.”

He took one look at her shining eyes and knew what she was going to say.

“I’m pregnant,” she said softly once he was seated.

He stared at her. At her bright eyes, her familiar face, her obvious happiness.

Pregnant.

Rebecca.

Pregnant.

For the first time, the word took on meaning.

Rebecca was carrying his child.

His child.

He was going to be a father. The knowledge thundered through him, leaving the oddest sensation in its wake—a mixture of disbelief, happiness and awe. He was suddenly seized by a powerful desire to pull her into his arms and kiss her.

He fought against his chaotic emotions, forcing himself to smile. He spoke carefully, with a lightness he did not feel. “That’s great. We should go out for dinner tonight to celebrate. You free?”

“I—Yes, I’m free.”

“Want to go to Angelo’s? Or somewhere different?”

“Let’s go to Angelo’s.”

“Okay.” He stood, needing to get out of there, needing to get to the privacy of his office where he could digest this news in private. “What do you say we plan to leave here about five-thirty? That way we can get you home early.” He smiled. “Don’t pregnant women need lots of rest?”

“Oh, don’t worry. I’m getting plenty of rest. But five-thirty is fine.”

Kyle walked back to his office in a daze. His feelings bewildered him. He had never expected to feel anything other than pleased for Rebecca if she achieved her goal of a pregnancy.

“Kyle?”

“Huh?” He looked up to see Chloe standing by his office door with a puzzled expression on her face.

“Boy, you were really concentrating hard,” she said. “I spoke to you twice and you didn’t even hear me.”

“Oh, sorry. What did you say?”

“I said I put the Cleghorne contract on your desk. Mark said you wanted to look it over.”

“Thanks.”

“Sure.” Her brown eyes were curious. “Is something wrong?”

“No.”

“You sure?”

“Of course I’m sure,” he said, his voice sharper than normal.
