“We are sheep for the slaughter!” Hardline exclaimed. “How can you live with yourself? Knowing what you know? Doing what you do? Tell us if you will not show us, monster. Confess your sins.”

Silence continued for longer than Eduardo had thought. For a second, his eye flipped up and out into the darkness—as if a cue card would be there for him or Hardline’s next line.

But Hardline just started hitting him.

Again and again.

In the face, in the shoulder, on his kneecaps. All the while shouting lunacies of global conspiracies, dragons, and the 1%. He spoke of the perversions of WONKYCOM, the trendy social network and cam site for the rich and the weird.

“Show us that it is not just special effects. Show us what you hide from all the people you know? Show us the work that Hitler’s scientists have aspired to all these years after the Allies looked the other way—in the name of science, in the name of power! Show us!”

Blood trickled from Eduardo’s nose. It was broken. He hadn’t expected a ringing in his ear. As a child, he and Alonso would fight. And their father’s means of making them stop was to make them stand in front of each other and trade punches until one of them got tired of getting hit.

Eduardo had always outlasted Alonso.

It made their mother weep—and for that their father beat her.

It made Eduardo think of Delilah Johnson.
