Alison meets Aldane in Cape Girardeau; Ishpeming gets involved

Early September

The Theory of the Mind had been overturned, apparently. Cadez was ready to win over the highly connected people with his telepathic implanting power that Gopee seemed to have perfected. Telly Haines had found Gupta’s sister, and had hired Indian thugs to kidnap and hold her. So Gupta surrendered, promising to really upgrade his C2B interface.

“Real-Prez is a moron – Cadez knows that, believe me, he tells me that every day. We have to start shifting our line of attack, gotta get ready to go after him, and stay on him until he is down for good. We can dump him when his stock is at its peak so we can lock in our gains,” Telly said.

Cadez had been slowly corralling the oligarchs and now had the keys to a number of business empires. All good shops to have as allies, with lots of off-the-books resources. Get the entities that will still be around at the end; fight it out in the final round.

But the real question – again – was what did it do to the Theory of the Mind? What is it that we perceive with C2B? And how is it different from doing the same thing with Fungus?

What is it – what is the mind when projected with a C2B-induced, hardwired invasion of its consciousness? Well one person who really knew was Alison Aykroyd. Alison knew, or at least had experienced it. After her experience of Gupta’s demonstration, right in front of Spence – and his nightmare boss Maybelle – after losing control of her own thoughts to Gupta, things were never the same. She had been having horrible dreams, dreams she couldn’t shake. Even though she was sure that Gupta had meant her no harm, she could not shake the persistent feeling that her mind could be invaded and controlled by something else. Every stray thought, every strange feeling was suddenly a potential harbinger of an invasion. Nothing helped. She had a feeling that it was getting worse every day. Sleep was elusive. Each day brought her closer to the realization that she had to do something to stop it.

Alison lay prone in the middle of her California King bed, on the third floor of the Cape Girardeau Marriott. Her orders were observe, report, and wait. She had spent the afternoon in a foul-smelling interrogation room watching the kid dance away from all the questions that really mattered. Alison truly admired Hank. Was it indeed Kip “Chubby” Rehain he had been working with? It sounded like it. None of the Missouri cops or lawyers had put it together. She stared at the ceiling, hungry, but resisting the minibar’s $10 Toblerone stick of Swiss chocolate, or the $12 salted nuts. She glanced over at the clock. It was just after midnight. She had closed the lobby bar two hours ago and was still under the influence of the three Old Fashioneds she had drunk by herself while staring at her fone.
