I OUGHT TO …

The headline didn’t do much for me: Keys to Unlocking Gridlock’s Potential. But the subtitle drew me in: Turn that traffic jam into an opportunity to firm those abs, boost antioxidant intake, examine career goals or listen to a book.

The column ticked off a list of things that will whip you into shape when you’re stuck in traffic: breathing techniques; behind-the-wheel calisthenics; facial exercises (I have a hunch these will signal “road rage” to the guy in the next lane); snacks to amp up your antioxidant intake; and audio books to juice up your self-image.

Pretty good stuff, because traffic congestion causes our blood pressure to shoot up, our ulcers to act up, and our temper to flare up. We’re wired for action. Waiting in line or in traffic triggers agitation.

You won’t have to reach far back in memory to recall when you were on the verge of coming unhinged. Your stomach was churning and you were mad enough to bite the lid off a tin can, because someone was inconsiderate of your schedule, your importance.
