Renoir now wanted to produce a “pure” art, one that was acceptable to the Salon and to the many wealthy clients that such exposure gathered, but he struggled for 10 years to find his new artistic direction. He knew his path was in museums and galleries where the old masters hung. His personal style had evolved into a modern Rococo, celebrating a pre-revolutionary, pre-industrial way of living that stressed artistic freedom, individual difference, and the importance of traditional crafts and skills. He tried to look back to an idealized past instead of forward to a regularized, scientific future.

To this end he wanted to establish a new collective of artists and wrote to Durand-Ruel in May 1884 to inform him of his plans. He had come back to nature and the beauty and irregularity of natural objects: he hated modern architecture and the changes to Paris that these had made. His society was to be called the Société des Irrégularistes and would promote handmade crafts and good art and design. They would hold regular exhibitions to promote their works. His effort came to nothing.

On leaving the south of France, Renoir returned to Paris where he continued his affair with Aline Charigot. On March 21, 1885, they had their first son, Pierre. On April 14, 1890, Renoir and Aline married and took a house in Montmartre, although they also spent increasing amounts of time in her home village of Essoyes in Champagne. Their second son, Jean—who would become a famous movie director—was born on September 15, 1894. To help look after the children, Aline’s 15-year-old cousin, Gabrielle Renard, came to live with them. She soon became one of Renoir’s favorite models. Another son, Claude (aka Coco), was born on August 4, 1901, after Renoir had celebrated his 60th birthday.
