Working from life: drawing ginger

I fixed a piece of tape to the reverse of this sample of ginger with a push pin. I then fixed the tape to my drawing board. This meant the ginger was in the optimum position for a study of a single object: at eye level and next to my drawing. The completed drawing can be seen on the right.

The ginger plant was originally cultivated in South China and has stunning yellow flowers. It is in the same family as turmeric and cardamom. The rhizome, an adaptation of the stem, is the part that is used in cooking, hence the term ‘stem ginger’. I drew the ginger in detail on hot-pressed watercolour paper in order to capture the textures of the diff erent segments. I used a full range of pencils, keeping the marks short and directional to help describe the texture of the plant.
