Chapter 7

A Time to Every Purpose

Katie stayed in the hospital for two days so the doctor could keep an eye on her, giving the DA and Katie time to decide where she was going to go. The DA went to the hospital the same day Serenity took Katie’s statement and had a lengthy conversation with her. The two of them talked it out and decided since Katie wanted to stay at home, the only way she could do that was to stay with Cami in the home. So Katie would feel safe, the DA and Serenity sat Cami down and told her not to mention Katie’s college fund, because that was off the table. The college funds were allocated for Katie and no one else. Cami agreed to keep Katie until a month after school let out in the house and they would discuss what to do afterward. Also, Abby and Serenity would be keeping close tabs on Katie, meeting with her separately at least once a week to ensure she still felt comfortable within the house.

Abby was the one who picked Katie up from the hospital on the day she got out. They casted Katie’s arm that morning, and after that, processed her for release. “Morning, sunshine,” Abby said, walking into the room around eleven in the morning. “Since Cami’s working, I’m going to take you home with me. It seems you have a prescription we need to pick up of Tylenol with Codeine for your wrist,” she explained, glancing through the release papers. “We’ll get that on the way home. Now,” she sat down on the chair next to the bed, “When you’re not in school and Cami is working, you’re going to be at my house. I know you are too old to need a babysitter, but it’s more for your protection and to keep an eye on you with the medicine.”

“I understand,” Katie said, sitting on the bed fully dressed.

“When you get that cast off you may need physical therapy for a bit.”

She picked up her left hand and twisted it in the air. “Figured as much.”

“You’re going to meet with me once a week and Serenity once a week to satisfy the DA. If at any time you feel threatened or not safe, you are to let me know immediately. Do you understand?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“We’re going to get you a cell phone that Cami is not to know about. Only me and Serenity will have the number. It’s a prepaid cell, so please limit how much of it you use. We’ll occasionally text you, and if you need us, text or call. Okay?”

“Sounds good.” Katie smiled, satisfied with the agreement. “I know it’s for my own good and safety.”

“Yep. We love you and don’t want a repeat.”

“What happens if it doesn’t work out with Cami?”

“We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. In the meantime, let’s see if this will work. Cami knows we’re keeping a very close eye on you and I doubt she’ll cross it, knowing the DA knows she was after your trust.
