Chapter 9

No Ifs, Ands, or Buts

In spite of her miserable night, Sophie was on the picket line on Tuesday morning. She had never felt so cold in her life. The freezing north wind cut through her coat and made her bones ache. Her socks felt like soggy sponges inside her worn-out boots. Her fingers were numb in her thin gloves. Her arms and shoulders hurt from holding up her sign, WE WANT A LIVING WAGE!

It was just their luck that they were striking during the worst snowfall in fifty-five years. Unemployed men had been hired to shovel the snow, while trucks hauled their loads away. People said it would take four days to clear all the snow.

The businesses on Spadina had slowed to a crawl. A lot of workers were on strike and had no money to buy food or other necessities. Chickens and ducks were squawking in their wooden crates; carp and whitefish were swimming in their tanks; people were marching on empty stomachs.

Every day on the walk to strike duty, Sophie passed Lansdowne Public School. She stopped to watch the kids playing in the schoolyard, or gazed at the windows decorated with cut-out paper snowflakes. Soon the snowflakes would be replaced by green shamrocks and figures of leprechauns hiding a pot of gold. It all made her feel much older than her fourteen years.
