CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Jesse

I've tried talking to the Director but it's useless.

My belief that there are spies for the Black Wreath Organization within the camp is getting stronger and stronger by the day. I've been following that student around for two weeks now. He's a Level Two student and he doesn't seem to have many friends. However, his behavior is also off.

He keeps sneaking around and I know he's in contact with one of the counselors. I just don't know who it is. I've seen him coming and going from the counselor's main room during mealtimes when most of the counselors are at the mess. When I tried to go in, after he leaves, to see who he went to talk to I find the door locked.

Something is definitely going on.

I glance at the message that Beth left for me at my barrack.

I don't know what surprise she has for me but I might not be able to see it.

Ezekiel Polztem, the Level Two I've been watching for the past few weeks, just slipped out from the bathroom in the mess. I stare at the open window in the locked stall. His bag is still there, the door still locked, which means he intends to come back for it. Peering over the divider between the stalls, I narrow my eyes.

The fact that he chose this route, rather than strolling out the front door, isn't exactly helping his case any. The boy has red flags written all over him.

Swinging down from the other side of the stall, I hurry outside towards where the window of the bathroom is located. Ezekiel's scent is all over and I raise my brow when I realize that he's not even bothered to hide his trail. He's gone towards the bridge and I'm about to get on the bridge when I realize something.

His scent.

It's old.

I'm a good tracker which is the only reason I was able to catch the difference. My eyes sharpen. He's not as dumb as I thought he was. Has he figured out that I've been following him?

I crouch down onto the ground before scooping up some of the dirt and sniffing it.

I was right.

Getting to my feet, I look around.

He's been backtracking here for some time, leaving different trails of his scent. With so many different ones, it's hard to pick out which is his most current one. I look around. One of his trails is leading towards the bridge but that is an old one. One goes into the forest, one towards the lake, and one towards the main buildings.

He could be meeting someone in the forest but, for some reason, my instincts are telling me that he's heading towards the main buildings which will be empty at this time during the dinner rush.

I follow his scent and as I do, I can feel it getting stronger, meaning that he walked along the same path. He's a devious one. The only reason someone would go to this extent is if they were desperate to hide their actions.
