You should ensure you carry a good flint and steel set, along with the matches, fire-starters and lighters. While matches may get wet and be useless and while lighter fluid eventually gets used up, a flint and steel set is perpetual. And you can always get a spark from striking steel against flint.

If you do not have a flint and steel set, it is easy to improvise. Simply use quartzite and your pocket knife’s steel blade. Or try a magnifying glass and direct the sun’s rays to start your fire!
