CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

wasn’t sure how long I had been sleeping in Annaoj’s hiding place. I turned after being awakened by the scent of vinegar. My eyes were blurry for a moment. Maybe that’s a symptom of not having anything solid to eat in a while.

“Hi,” I responded to his wave.

Did I just say hi to him??? “WHO...Who are F___ are you?” I shouted. He was sitting on the side of the bed I was on. I checked myself and everything I had on, hoping this stranger didn’t touch me. He was black, another slave, I would have guessed. Wasn’t bad looking–– squared cheeks, chocolate complexion but a slave he was alright.

“So, you’re the strange young lady I’ve been hearing about, the one who has special powers.”

“What are you talking about?”

A crease formed over his forehead as he gave me this sly smile. “News do travel real quickly around here, you know.”

I fastened my legs together.

“So, show me what kind of powers you have. Heard you cause a stone to hit Massa Thomas. Can you make it rain?”

“How did you get inside here?”

“I have my own keys.”

Still on that bed, I shuffled away from him. “You mean, you’re Annaoj’s boyfriend?”

“Oh, so Annaoj’s the one who has been hiding you?”

He slipped his hand up my dress, dirty fingers creepy like a lizard.

My pulse raged. I sat up on the bed, tightening my frock around my body! “I want you to leave!”

“And if I don’t, what, you’re going to cause a stone to fall on my head?”

BLAM!!!!

AAGGGGHHH!!!

He held his head before falling to a thud on the floor.

I ran from the hut.

“Annaoj! That was you?”

“Hurry. Let’s go,” she pulled.

She had come to my rescue, just in time, again. She’s obviously good at throwing things.

“I woke up and saw him inside the hut. How he got inside, I honestly don’t know.”

“He’s a darn rascal. That’s what he is,” she said. “I’ve been wanting to clobber his backside for so long.”

“You know him?”

“Course, I know that jahncro.”

“Your boyfriend?”

“Maybe he was,” Annaoj said while pulling me through the cane fields, vigorously brushing leaves from our faces. She kept looking over her shoulders.

“What, he cheated?”

“He sold me out.”

I stopped! Our hands jolted. She released me.

“Wait. So you’re telling me that...”
