Kaitlyn sat in the staff meeting, listening to the section editors give quick reviews and updates for the next few days. Deadlines were highlighted and she remembered that she needed to submit her review of 800 Daily in the next 48 hours. She sat among two dozen freelance, semi-contracted, and web writers. It was a challenging career as a writer to produce, stay relevant, and earn a living. She couldn’t help checking her phone every few moments, hoping to see Jordan’s number. She reached back into the past 24 hours and was still spinning from the experience. She smiled to herself as she contemplated the future challenges of restraining herself when she was close to Jordan. Lost in her thoughts, the meeting came to a close around her.

“Kait? Kait?” The section editor for Lifestyles and Living drew Kaitlyn back into the moment.

“Oh! I’m sorry, John. I was just thinking about one of my submissions.” Kaitlyn smiled up at a man in his late-30s with a short beard and shaggy hair that looked good despite the fact it was evident that he was past due on a haircut. John exuded confidence.

“No problem. Could you follow me back to my office? I’d like to go over some upcoming projects. I think you might be the right person for the job.” Kaitlyn nodded a quick acknowledgment and rose to follow him.

Initially, John held his ground and Kaitlyn was surprised by the proximity. “Oh. Sorry,” she mumbled as her bag jarred against John’s arm when she swung it over her shoulder. John quickly stepped back and turned toward his office, saying over his shoulder, “My fault entirely.”

Seated at a small round table in the tight office, Kaitlyn looked expectantly across the table. She noticed a small framed picture of what she assumed was John’s wife and child behind his desk. “So, Kait, you’ve been working with us for a little over- two years. I went back and reviewed your work and it’s good,” he said with a smile and what looked like deep consideration. “It looks like you were very busy your first 18 months. You have a lot of pieces completed during that time.”

“Yes.” Kaitlyn shrugged as she remembered the months following the loss of her parents. “I kind of threw myself into my work during that time. And I knew that if I wanted to make a career of this, I’d have to spend some time building my portfolio.”

“Well, your work is good and has been well received among the editors.” Kaitlyn smiled with gratitude. “There’s a possibility that Sandy Zhu, a junior editor, will be leaving us. She currently oversees Food and Event submissions before they hit my desk. I’m sure you’re familiar with Sandy?” Kaitlyn nodded and smiled slowly in anticipation. John returned her smile. “It would mean more ‘desk’ time and less time experiencing and exploring the city on our dime. You could continue to do most of your work from home, but you’ll need to work with a variety of personalities and writing styles.
