USER INTERFACE & USER EXPERIENCE

the 30-second code

The user interface (UI) is the thing the user (website visitor, device owner or player) sees when they interact with our software. This is a major part of the success of your creation, and often takes time, experimentation and repetition to get right. It might also evolve and change as trends in design come and go. It is part of user experience (UX), which also affects how the user feels when using the software. A user interface might have a number of beautiful animations that transition a user from one part of the application to another, but if they interfere with how the app works, this creates a bad user experience, and can lead to bigger problems. A good way to consider how you can improve a user interface is to imagine someone incredibly busy using your application. Does the space between buttons cause them to have to drag their mouse further than they need to? Can you include some keyboard shortcuts that would make a repetitive task easier? Does the contrast between the text and the background make information harder to read on a phone on a sunny day? Or, in the case of Apple’s bug, are elements of the UI interfering with core functions of the app? These are all questions that someone might consider when crafting a piece of software people really want to use.
