Chapter 7
Mr. Darcy was struggling to remember that this was all for convincing the disappointed and angry crowd in the hallway and not real.
His body was reacting to her like it was real. He was panting, his fingers fumbling on the buttons of her dress. He had wished for this for so long, to have her yielding in his arms, the ruby red of her lips parted but not mocking or laughing at him.
Elizabeth looked at him so innocently. Her eyes were large and luminous. He reached for her, longing to feel her under his touch.
Mr. Darcy shook out of his reverie. He had to take control, or he would forget she was innocent, not deserving of Wickhamâs revenge on him. That they were to pretend and not have this be real.
He forced himself to go through with this exchange. He had longed for her, dreamed of her, stroked himself to pleasure with thoughts of her, but he had never wanted to have her against her will, with both of them forced to play-act to save her virtue and possibly their lives.
His mouth felt dry. He refused to look down, to give into his baser needs. This was only a role, to prove to the crowd in the hall that Miss Elizabeth was having relations with him to satisfy their base desires. But he knew he had to convince himself of this. Because the way Elizabeth was offering herself to him, the way she was breathing, willing, wantingâ¦
He needed to remember this was all for show.
Mr. Darcy ran his palm over her soft bodice. He felt the heat of her naked breasts beneath the thin satin of her shift. She was so giving in his arms. He shook his head to clear his mind, to remind himself that he wanted Elizabeth as his wife. That they needed to appease the angry crowd but not destroy themselves. Because there was only one way to keep her reputation intact, and he would never do anything to hurt her.
He would do whatever was necessary to get them out of this situation Wickham had manipulated. Then he would ask her to marry him, her poor connections and uncouth family bedamned. He wanted her for his wife, the mother of his children, the keeper of his home and his heart. Mr. Darcy would no longer deny that want, that need, that undeniable desire. But not here, not in this appalling situation. Now was not the time to make his proposal.
He kept himself busy, pressing his thigh against her hip. He intended it to be a subtle way to remind her of their purpose, but he felt it instead as a frenzied attempt to control himself. To control his bodyâs want.
Mr. Darcy touched her through her thin layer of fabric, slipping his hand underneath her dress, caressing her legs and hips. He rubbed her smooth skin, traced a circle. His fingertips brushed over her soft curls. She pressed her hips against the hardness of his. The sounds she made nearly drove him insensible.
