Olivia Harringay fiddled with the strap on her summer dress and flicked back her auburn hair. She was ready for another week of work, and this one promised to be bigger than any that had gone before it. By Friday afternoon, she should have learned if she had been successful in gaining the promotion she had applied for. Five days away from more money, more power and more opportunities. Senior Editor at AMI Music, the largest online music blog in the UK and one of the top 10 in the world.
That was the goal, and she was so close to it that she could almost reach out and touch it.
But for now, she would have to make do with reaching out and turning on her desktop monitor and beginning what she hoped would be her final week as just an Editor. It would be weird to have the Senior tag before her job title, she had thought on many occasions while pondering her potential promotion. After all, she was only twenty-nine. She had listened to their CDs on repeat for hours on end, performed all the routines in the mirror while singing into her hairbrush and had even persuaded her mum to buy her a Union Jack dress like the one Geri Halliwell wore to the Brit Awards in 1997. But her absolute favourite childhood memory was going to watch the group at Manchester Arena when she was nine. Seeing the popstars performing on the massive stage, in their incredible costumes and in a gigantic venue with 15,000 people, had well and truly blown her mind and she had known then that music would be her life.
Of course, her original dream had been to be up there on the stage herself one day, singing her heart out into a microphone to a sea of adoring fans. The plan had been to form a girl group and then, after years of success, to achieve even greater things as a solo artist. Geri had done it. Beyoncé had done it.
And Olivia Harringay was going to do it.
But, as with most childhood dreams, the problem with
