Focus Executives on Vision, Not Conflict Resolution

One of the best ways to engage executives is to seek their input from a strategic direction perspective. Their insights—into where the organization is heading, what other organizations are doing, and what their specific future plans are—can help you craft and shape your own vision.

For architects, executives are likely the most important of all stakeholders. It is a good idea to occasionally stand back and “step into their shoes” to see how the vision fits into their perspective given the other priorities and projects. By doing so, it becomes possible to align the vision with the strategies. This approach will also help you determine which of the competing delivery dimensions (cost, quality, and time) can be sacrificed to improve the others.

If the business wants to be first to market, then time is the key dimension. In this scenario, recognizing the essence of time and suggesting quicker, albeit possibly costlier, ways of delivery may be popular with executives and improve the vision further. Remember that technology is part of the business, however, and as such needs to align with business strategies.

By working with executives, you can gain critical allies in helping sell the vision. Part of good leadership is building cohesive organizational alignment.
