Magpie

What it looks like: A medium-sized member of the crow family of birds, a corvid, with a black back and bright white belly. The magpie’s long dangling tail makes it very easy to spot in flight, and its wingtips have an iridescent blue-green sheen up close.

What it sounds like: A harsh, quite loud, chattering and rattling call.

Where to find it: The magpie can be found in abundance in town and country alike – in any park or garden, although there are fewer magpies in upland areas. It likes to build its thorny nest at the crowns of dense trees and shrubs, and will often be seen loitering at the side of busy roads.

What it eats: Magpies are scavengers. They eat anything from dead mammals, especially roadkill, to earthworms, fruit, insects and discarded food. They are most notorious, though, for raiding the nests of songbirds in the springtime, eating the eggs and sometimes young chicks too.

Chance of seeing one: You have a 95% chance of seeing this bird if you go on a walk in any town or city. They are remarkably adaptable birds thanks to their keen intellect and varied diet. But where you have lots of magpies, you will have fewer songbirds.
