DARLA AND KEELY spent the next thirty minutes trying to locate Brooklyn. Eventually, they learned Brooklyn and Kristopher were working on getting a staged area set up for a comedic pirate performance that was going to be taking place later that afternoon. From what they could tell, it seemed like there was going to be a good lineup of performers.

The first thing Darla spotted when they arrived at the stage area was a large promotional poster depicting a handful of women in pirate attire with the title Giggly Wenches Comedy Act. Among the women on the poster, they spied Brooklyn at the forefront. Darla found that extremely odd. From what little she knew of Brooklyn, the woman didn’t seem to have a funny bone in her body. Apparently, Keely was thinking the same thing.

“She didn’t strike me as a comedian,” Keely said as they made their way past a handful of wooden benches that were set up for the audience.

Soon they spotted a small stage area that was currently being decorated by none other than Brooklyn and Kristopher.

“Hey, Brooklyn!” Darla said as they hurried down the aisle, coming to the edge of the stage.

Brooklyn, who had been in the middle of stapling some drapes onto a backdrop, spun around at the sound of her name. Her large pirate wench skirt swirled as she did so, and she offered a half smile down at Darla and Keely. “Oh, hey… Darla, right?”

“Right,” Darla said. “And this is my sister, Keely. I saw the poster. Very nice. How long have you been doing stand-up?”

“Thank you. Not too long,” Brooklyn admitted. “I did some acting back in high school. You know, some school plays and a few local theater productions, but nothing too major.”

“That sounds like fun,” Darla said.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t be doing it now, but one of the original women who did the comedy act dropped out last year, and they were short one wench. So, I volunteered as a fill-in for this year. I basically just follow a script.”

“Oh, don’t let her talk about herself like that,” Kristopher teased, taking over the backdrop. “She has some great comedic timing.”

“Aw, thanks,” Brooklyn said, blushing slightly. “I filled in for them once before a few years back, so I guess that’s why they asked me.”

“Well, that’s awesome of you,” Darla said. “I guess if you hadn’t agreed, they would have had to rewrite their performance, huh?”

“Basically,” Brooklyn said, shrugging her shoulders at the thought. “But I’m the new girl in the group, so somehow that means I’m the one here early setting up the scene and props, pretty much by myself.”

“A bit of friendly hazing?” Keely asked.

“Exactly,” Kristopher said and laughed. “I think they knew she had me for backup.”

“That or they just didn’t want to be bothered with it.” Brooklyn laughed.

“Well, that’s nice of you to come out and help,” Darla said.

Brooklyn shrugged a shoulder. “Someone has to do it, right?”

“I guess that is true,” Darla said. “Do you guys have a quick second?”

“Sure.
