SCUMBLING

The bright colours of pastels lend themselves to the technique of scumbling. Using the side of the pastel, lightly drag it over the first layer of colour. The effect is very textural.

BASIC MARK MAKING

The binder content is considerably higher in hard pastels, which makes them easy to sharpen and less likely to break. This quality makes them more suitable for linear work as the variety of marks here shows. The sides can be used to block in large areas of colour, which can then be worked over, as shown opposite.

Hard pastels have more binder and less pigment yet this doesn’t necessarily make them inferior.

They are also good for underpainting or outlining prior to overlaying with soft pastels.

Hard pastels come in a wide range of colours – both pale and extremely vivid
