SUCCESS SNAPSHOT

For one of his highly anticipated motivational stunts, Principal Alan Cook of Orangevale, California’s Green Oaks Fundamental Elementary lay down in a display case stocked with donated eggs that had passed their expiration dates. First, though, he showed up at school in a horse-drawn cart and endured a smelly egg facial. After the singing of egg-related songs and the reading of eggstatic poetry, Cook took the plunge wearing a snorkel, mask, and swim trunks—only to hop out about a minute later before he was overpowered by rotten yolks. For a bracing finish, firefighters hosed Cook off. Although his stunts are tied to schoolwide reading goals, the principal and his faculty use them as the basis for math and science lessons as well. For instance, students studied birds and totaled up how many eggs it would take to cover the reclining administrator. Even though Cook lost a set of clothes over that stunt (“I had no idea eggs stained like that,” he says), the principal calls the experience rewarding. “It’s a lot of fun,” Cook says. “I think it humanizes us. People are willing to talk about the stunt even if they feel a little intimidated talking about academics. Parents get involved.”
