History II

Come 1989 and after a fairly poor run in North America, Sega prepared to release its new 16-bit machine, the Genesis.

In 1991 Nintendo was charged for their unfair conduct, which opened up the third-party licenses for Sega. Unfortunately the damage had been done in North America so Sega turned its eye to Europe.

Third party support was much stronger in Europe compared to the USA, making the system very successful.

Distributed by many companies all over Europe, the Master System enjoyed a much-longer production run than in Japan or the USA.

By 1993 the Master System was the most popular console in Europe, outselling even the superior Mega Drive.

The Master System was finally discontinued in Japan in 1989 and the USA in 1991.

Due to the increased popularity the console survived for five more years in Europe and Canada, finally folding in 1996.

The last European licensed title was The Smurfs Travel the World, released in 1996 by Infogrames.

The last Japanese licensed title for the Master System was Bomber Raid, released February 4 th 1989.

The last American licensed title was Sonic the Hedgehog, released October 25 th 1991.
