The length of your sentences and paragraphs will also affect the pacing. The reader’s eye will naturally skim over scenes with short sentences and paragraphs (with a lot of white space on the page). Short paragraphs and sentences are just naturally easier to read, and the quicker the eye can read, the quicker the eye will read.

So, if you want to create a scene of intense, high action, keep your sentences and paragraphs short. Try looking at a suspense novel or an action scene—those pages tend to be written in short, short bursts with lots of white space.
