4 The Rebellion Emerges
Morton set his cruise control for eighty-three miles per hour. That was fast enough to get around the slowpokes on the interstate and just under the cutoff point where the state troopers were likely to pull you over. He was heading east, back to Doug Riversâ secret hideaway apartment in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Morton needed more answers; he had more than enough questions to last for weeks. Taking two personal days from work, explaining the trip to his wife, and all the nickel-and-dime expenses that he was sure to incur along the way were the easy things. Now as Mortonâs eyes shot back and forth from the gauges on the rental car to the traffic ahead of him, he had time to think about the more difficult tasks ahead. Was he going on a wild goose chase? Maybe this whole thing was nothing more than a half-cooked conspiracy theory constructed from the mind of an alcoholic reporter, a disgraced one at that. Morton wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead and then absentmindedly turned the carâs AC unit on high. Yes, fat people get hot quicker than everybody else, but it was adrenaline that had the sweat pouring from Mortonâs brow at the moment.
There was always the other side of the coin, and Morton had spent many hours in his bed next to his sleeping wife thinking about it. What if it was all true? What if there was a town where the people lived their entire existence within the 1950s. A secret town where crazy things happened, and nobody knew about it from the outside world. If half of what Morton had read from the briefcase were true, he was more than likely going to be walking into a potential death trap.
From the privacy of his home and behind the locked doors of his study, Morton had read and catalogued every scrap of paper Doug Rivers had placed in the briefcase. Over the course of several hours, Morton assembled a decent picture of what Doug Rivers had been doing in Indiana. Like most reporters, Rivers used codes to identify informants and witnesses. Because of the level of fear Rivers appeared to feel he was in, he must have decided at some point in the investigation not to create a codebook to go with his files. Morton reluctantly accepted the notion that he might never know the true identities of all of Riversâ sources. So far, Morton counted forty-seven.
What was easier to establish was a timeline of events. At some point over the last two years, Rivers was contacted by a high-ranking official from the town of Verndale. This person, identified only by the initials HRG, gave an account so unbelievable that Rivers said that at first he had discounted it. It was a story about a town where everyone lives in the 1950s. A place where people are controlled by a magical mineral and a maniacal bunch of government leaders who direct a small army of informants.
