Chapter Seventeen
NORA
The bitch was asking too many questions.
She simply had to go.
To be honest, I never really thought it would get this far. Two private tutors within a year? Thatâs the stuff mystery novels are made of, which simply isnât my genre. I was always more of a romantic type. That is, until Richard ruined our marriage. But weâll get to that.
First, I want to talk about what happened when Emma arrived on our doorstep. She came out of the blue, like lightning wanting to make its mark. I wasnât entirely upset to meet her either â Jacob needed his education just like any other child, and she seemed to fit the bill. Not only that, but she was pleasant enough to begin with. I sort of liked her⦠until I didnât.
Thatâs another thing weâll get to.
On the day Emma started working in our house, I set her up in Jacobâs bedroom and left her to it, then went about my household chores. There was plenty of cleaning to do, but I hurt myself early in the morning. It was Richardâs fault, really â he always crammed the clothes into his drawers too tight, so the bottom sagged out and the clothes caught on the drawer above. I had to wrestle it open to put some new clothes in (Iâll be damned if I will sort out this whole mess for him), then bang it shut. But I didnât account for the protruding drawer above, which my arm smacked into so hard I wanted to shout. The pain was explosive and deep, but I let it go and continued with my day just as intended. Everything was fine at that time.
The very next day, Emma happened to catch sight of the bruise on my arm. I saw the little look of concern she gave me, but I didnât want to say anything. She was probably very busy with Jacob, so the last thing she needed was to get caught up in my boring stories about Richardâs underwear drawer and how I took a simple knock.
But she wouldnât leave it alone.
âWhatâs this?â she asked, reaching out for my arm.
Naturally, I withdrew. âItâs nothing.â
âItâs not nothing. Itâs as purple as Vimto.â
It was hard to believe an employee of mine would be so bold as to question me like that. To tell the truth, I took an instant dislike to her there and then, but it didnât register just yet. For now, I simply had to put her straight. âThis doesnât concern you.â
âIâm just one woman looking out for another. Let me see.â
With my sleeve rolled up, she examined the giant bruise and then looked at me with all the pity and sympathy in the world. An idea immediately fell into place. After what happened with Katie, would it really be the worst thing in the world to have Emma think I was being abused? The people in town believed it anyway, so what was one extra person?
The fact was the police were always going to come back again someday.
