Ms Lobelia shoos us out of the classroom saying, “You’ll be late for lunch. Off you go.”

“That was strange,” says Shalini as she lights up her hat. The corridor is dark. “I’m sure it turned red.”

I walk away. “Let’s talk about it while we eat,” I say. I walk faster. Pies are waiting and my stomach is empty. Plus I have to find a way to get the book and the map. “Hurry up. I have a surprise for you.” Oddbod appears in the darkness ahead. I run to meet him.

Shalini shouts, “Ophelia. You’re running! You can’t run!” Her voice is squeaky with surprise.

I almost trip over Oddbod as he weaves in and out of my legs.

Jess catches me up. “You’ve broken the rule!”

“I know,” I say. “I broke it before, when I arrived. It’s no big deal.”

“It’s a huge deal,” says Jess. She isn’t squeaking like Shalini but she sounds shocked. “No one can run in the corridors. It’s impossible. Watch.”

She runs. She hesitates and stops. She runs some more.

“I can run!” she says.

Shalini tries it. “Me too!”

They’re both doing a look from The Book of Puzzlement.

Jess folds her arms. “Hm,” she says. “Mysterious happenings are happening. I suspect we are starring in a MYSTERY. The Mystery of Toadspit Towers and THE NEW GIRL.” She holds her fingers up one at a time. “Let’s examine the unusual occurrences. The witchwood high-fives you. Ms Sage thinks you have a hat. Oddbod lets you cuddle him. The ticks go in the right boxes. You sing Vernon the Veraptor to sleep.”

“That was not my voice,” I say quickly. “It was the spoon.” She nods as if she’s adding this evidence to her list. She’s used up all her fingers so she moves to the other hand.

“The flowers bloom. The witchwood tree turns red, for a moment. And now you’ve broken Ms Toadspit’s no-running rule.”

“And so have we,” says Shalini.

“Yes, we have,” says Jess. Then she says to me, “But you’re not a witch because—”

“I have no hat. I don’t feel it in me elbows and Ms Sage has enchanted the spoon to keep me here. I don’t know why.”

Jess closes her fingers. “I see. So we must investigate and work out why—”

I interrupt. “No. We must not. I’m an actress not a detective. I will find a way to get that map. I will escape and there will be no mystery to investigate for I shall be gone.”

Oddbod jumps into my arms and meows. I don’t think he wants me to leave.
