Sandro returned to the fold late afternoon bearing chicken burgers he had acquired from the catering truck. We fell upon them ravenously as somehow popcorn had failed to meet all our nutritional requirements. Feeling much more capable of tackling the world with food in my belly and a cold can of cider in my hand I decided that it didn’t matter what the world thought, I knew what the truth was and the world could just go suck eggs.

After a second cider I agreed with Sandro that another evening in the convivial atmosphere of the pub would be a fine way to spend our time. I also suggested, as we slogged across the field in the direction of the village, that I was more than happy to play at being decoy for Maddie and Sandro if they so desired. After all, if the world already thought I was shagging Alessandro DeLuca, then why not take advantage of the fact and provide cover for Maddie and Sandro’s budding relationship. I liked him. I loved her. It seemed only common sense to make the best of the situation.

I watched the two of them lock eyes, smile and nod, and knew it was game on. For some reason this lightened my soul and with a laugh I took a running leap and launched myself onto Sandro’s back. I couldn’t remember a time in my adult life when I had felt so carefree. It was exhilarating.

“Come on, lover boy, take me to the pub. I am feeling the need for a very chocolatey dessert and some outrageous, over the top flirting.” I was feeling freer than I had in just about ever, light-hearted and full of cheek. It was like someone had flicked a switch on inside me, and I was remembering that long ago, before I decided to apply a shitload of rules to my life, I had moments of spontaneity and hilarity. Somewhere in my sixteenth year, broken hearted and lost, I had decided that the way to keep that from happening again was to control all behaviour my mother considered inappropriate. And along the way I lost myself.

The evening was brilliant. Security kept the paparazzi out of the pub, but it couldn’t keep out everyone and everyone seemed to have a phone with a built-in camera these days. Most people tried to be sneaky about it, but I could see them out the corner of my eye, surreptitiously taking photos of me and Sandro. We played it coyly, little hand touches here, me leaning into him there, an occasional flirtatious smile. The hardest bit was trying not to burst into a fit of laughter at any given moment when we were making these subtle moves.

Maddie took on the task of monitoring social media and within half an hour of us entering the pub there were photos of Sandro and me on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and just about everywhere else one could think of. The more posts we found, the more we laughed and the more fodder we provided for the rumour mill.
