By the third day the stems have formed and are headed up in search for light. The seed leaves are still yellow without the light, but that is what we want at this stage. There is time for greening later; right now we want the stem to stretch. At this point the growth is uneven, but it will even out soon. The stems start to lift the paper cover.

By the end of the fourth day, the stems are well formed, have pushed the paper up about an inch, and are ready to come out of the dark. Either at the end of day four or the beginning of day five, set the tray on a windowsill or shelf near a window. It does not need to be a south-facing window; if you can see there is enough light to green the soil sprouts.
