I was of course already registered (courtesy of Mrs. Stigger’s psychopathic canine) and grateful that someone was able to attend to me more or less straight away. I sat on an examination bench and explained to a nurse what I had been doing, and how quickly the pain had arisen. She carefully massaged and probed my hand and wrist. She didn’t think any bones were broken, but as she prodded and probed the joint itself, we soon arrived at a conclusion.

“Tell me if this hurts?”

Her query was greeted with a resounding “Yes!” as I violently squirmed, writhed, and practically leapt off the bench.

The nurse immediately diagnosed tendonitis, and explained (with the aid of a wall chart) that hurling a large quantity of soil and bark chips over a seven-foot fence, was not something the human wrist was actually designed to do.

She prescribed rest and a course of anti-inflammatory tablets. I was okay with the second bit but couldn’t see where I’d get the time to fit in the first. I was then fitted with a brace that bound an aluminum strip to my arm by means of three Velcro straps.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but that brace and I would spend several months together.
