Chapter Ten

Malcolm’s voice was low and deadly when he looked at Nessa. “You traitorous bitch.”

Cadence and Sheila didn’t have time to move before they were seized and their weapons confiscated. Nessa, meanwhile, did a slow saunter until she nearly touched the magical wall. She licked her lips and lowered her voice. “You always were too pliable, my love.” A throaty laugh erupted. “Did you truly think my brother abandoned me? Nay, ‘twas he who convinced Keir to spare my life, to bring me here so that I might once more assist my Laird Hamilton.”

“Besides,” she said, disgusted eyes swinging Cadence’s way. “You’ve been just as traitorous, husband. It took you no time—”

“Enough,” Grant said, his deep voice stopping Nessa mid-sentence. He grabbed Sheila’s arm and dragged her forward. “This entrance is the only way out of this cave. Every time you try to find a way around my magic.” He touched the area above and between his eyes, his regard flickering to Sheila when he spoke to Malcolm. “This one will feel the pain here.” His eyes narrowed. “And we both know she is not nearly strong enough to withstand its crippling power.”

“Leave Cadence behind then,” Sheila pleaded. “You don’t need her.”

Grant’s eyes remained locked with his brother’s. “Nay, but he does.”

“Son, please dinnae do this,” Coira said.

But it didn’t matter. They were already being led away.

Cadence met Malcolm’s eyes one last time. He didn’t have to say a word. The promise was there. I will find you.

Grant continued ahead with Nessa while Sheila and Cadence were yanked along by his men. Adorned in yellow and black plaids, they could only be MacLeod’s.

Though she knew she should be petrified, Cadence felt surprisingly calm. Even more so when Adlin’s voice entered her mind. “Well, ye’ve got yourself in a situation now, aye lassie?”

“So it seems. Any words of wisdom?”

“Let Sheila speak for you both.” Adlin paused. “‘Twill be her words that soften the blow.”

Soften the blow? “What do you mean?”

But, as usual, he was gone.

Cadence realized that they were heading back toward the stones that brought them here to begin with. So their trip to the Hebrides was merely a means to take her and Sheila prisoner? That seemed odd. And what of William and Soul Reader? Was Malcolm’s father alive? Doubtful. If anything, it seemed Nessa had said that as a ruse.

Then there was Malcolm’s wolf. She scanned the thin trees and cliffs. Where was he? Perhaps he was lying in wait to lunge when they least expected it. But no help came and soon enough they reached the stones. Nessa, a small, hateful smile on her face, eyed Cadence. “‘Tis a slippery thing that you thought to take my husband from me, lass.”

“Actually, I didn’t and you damned well know it.” Cadence didn’t care if Adlin had urged her to remain silent. She was furious. “As it turns out, Malcolm looking my way was the best move he could’ve made.”

Nessa slapped her face so hard, Cadence’s head whipped to the side.
