Description

Is WoW racist or sexist? This claim is heard often, but to what extent is it true or false? One of the most famous theories of justice to be created in the twentieth century is that of the late American philosopher, John Rawls. Does WoW achieve the sort of equality envisioned by Rawls? Can WoW tell us anything about the positives and negatives of theories of justice in general?

What sorts of gender issues come up as a result of men playing as women and vice versa? Does WoW erase gender inequality from the real world or increase it? Or is it impossible to entirely eradicate gender bias even in WoW? When people role play in WoW, in what way does the lore influence their virtual identity? If players agree to the conditions of the gamespace (for example, PvP) why do they still complain about the consequences? Although you learned about ethics as an expert philosopher, the ability to create an in-game identity (a toon) brings some other ethical concerns to the table. Is your identity in WoW a false identity? If so, what are the implications? What do a person’s anonymous in-game actions say about their morals?
