The Rough Riders were a group of American soldiers in the

Spanish-American War who were led by Theodore “Teddy”

Roosevelt (standing in center). Prior to the war, Roosevelt had

served as an assistant secretary of the navy. He sometimes

spoke out about the need for the United States to help Cuba.

When it became clear that the United States would be involved

in a war, Roosevelt quit his job and, along with army surgeon

Leonard Wood, formed the First United States Volunteer Cavalry.

The troop soon became known as the Rough Riders because

it was made up of many cowboys, hunters, and outdoorsmen

from the western United States. Large numbers of Native

Americans and African Americans also joined the troop. The

Rough Riders trained for only one month before they were sent

into battle. They helped the United States gain control of Cuba.

In 1899, Roosevelt published a book called Rough Riders, which

included his personal story about his adventures in battle.
