Falcon paced restlessly across his balcony, until he thought he might wear a path right across the stone. He wanted to go after her, the headstrong woman, but he dare not leave his home unguarded. He had a terrible uneasiness sitting in the pit of his stomach, something that warned no good was coming his way.

Why? Why had she disappeared on him while he was still asleep? He would have gone with her. The fool woman probably still thought she was protecting him. He knew she'd gone back to confront her father. It was the only place she would have gone.

With an agitated sigh, he went to the railing of the balcony and gazed as far as he could across the countryside. It wasn't a long ride to the Arshwyn keep, several hours at the most. If she had not returned by nightfall, he was going after her. He didn't trust her father. Not in the least.

He took a deep breath and tried to force some calmness into himself. Steele is a warrior, he reminded himself. She was no stupid, impulsive girl. She was a knight. She was a brave fighter. He'd lifted her out and taken her to bed, then had spent at least an hour just staring at her perfect body and mane of gleaming ebony hair. She was gorgeous, and so strong. She defied her family and fought for the Ryffsalli, which took a tremendous amount of courage. Not only that, but in one day's time, she had married a man she barely knew, discovered she was half Ryffsalli, was the rightful heir to the throne, and that her father had, more than likely, kidnapped her mother. That was the kind of day no one sane would wish to have. Her entire world had been destroyed. Yet, even though she'd cried, when her emotional outburst was over, she accepted the information. She took it in stride and moved on, and still was able to make him laugh and smile.

That was the thing that amazed him the most. There was something magical about Steele in her ability to send such light streaming straight into his heart. Light and fire. Light that made him remember what happiness felt like and fire that set him ablaze with desire for her. He'd been so alone and so cold for so long. With one impulsive move, she had altered his entire existence. And try as he might, he could not find fault with it.
