NICO VAN DER MERWE

This is one of the larger ranges of wines made by a “moonlighting” winemaker. Nico van der Merwe has been Saxenburg’s cellarmaster since 1990. In 1999 he started his own venture under the name Wilhelmshof, with the help of wife Petra and brother Robert Alexander, winemaker at the Trawal co-op, with wines made in his and his brother’s cellars, from both Stellenbosch and Olifants River. In the mid 1990s, the name changed to Nico van der Merwe Wines, Nico became sole winemaker, and work started on a small cellar on his new property in the Polkadraai Hills, not far from Saxenburg where the wines were made until his own place was ready in 2011. But grapes continue to be bought in, with the emphasis on reds and particularly on Syrah. The flagship Mas Nicolas is a blend of Cab and Syrah, big, dark, and succulently serious, and the Nicolas van der Merwe range (the ringing of changes on the name can be confusing) includes a massive, showy, oaky, and ripe Syrah, uncompromisingly matured in new American oak. There’s a delicious Cape Elements Shiraz-Cinsaut-Grenache, recalling Nico’s serious involvement in the south of France, and an entry-level range of varietal wines called Robert Alexander.
