The last section of Via Cesare Battisti is overlooked by the massive bell tower of San Fredianoa. Rebuilt in the 12th c. before Pisa exerted its influence, it is an example of pure Luccan Romanesque. The bare façade is lined with white marble that was taken from the Roman amphitheatre. The high central part, which was renovated in the 13th c., is decorated with a mosaic of the Ascension executed by Luccan artists in Byzantine style. The aisles are lined with Renaissance and Baroque chapels and separated from the nave by ancient columns. A semicircular apse stands at the end. To the right of the entrance is a 13th-c. font carved with dynamic sculptures of the life of Moses. The Chapel of Sant’Agostino is lined with frescoes by Amico Aspertini from Ferrara, one of which refers to the transfer of the “Holy Face” (a wooden body from a crucifix) from Luni to Lucca.

Return to Via Fillungo and take a vaulted alley on the right.

The unusual Piazza dell’Anfiteatroa is oblong in shape as it fills the space where the 2nd-c. Roman amphitheatre used to stand. The ancient building was gradually dismantled to provide materials during the Middle Ages for the construction of the city’s churches and was then built over with houses. Close by, the small and irregularly shaped Piazza San Pietro is the setting for noble 16th-c. palaces and the two-coloured bell tower built from stone and brick for the Romanesque Church of San Pietro Somaldi (12th-c.). The church façade was completed in the 14th c. with two orders of loggias in accordance with Pisan tradition.
