Corsica, The (Italian) French Island

Napoleon Bonaparte’s mountainous Mediterranean homeland isn’t just a beautiful rock, although 50 percent of the wine is labeled Ile de Beauté IGP—the Island of Beauty; it’s making some increasingly good wine from its varied climates and soils. The Italian influence here is striking. One-third of the grapes are Nielluccio (neal-LOOCH-o), a.k.a. Sangiovese. It shows the earthy, floral, herbal side of the grape but is unmistakably Sangiovese. Fifteen percent of grapes are Sciaccarello (see-ahc-ah-RELL-o), also known as the mainly Tuscan grape Mammolo, which adds spice and violet notes to Sangiovese. Cannanou or Grenache is often earthy and simple, and the white grape Rolle, or Vermentino, is a stony, smoky, citrusy wine. In addition to these Italian and French grapes, the island boasts a bunch of native grapes, but none of the wines made from them is exported. Look for vin de corse aop wines if you want slightly better quality than Ile de Beauté IGP.
