Chapter Seventeen

The next morning Melody, Ruby, and Boochy stopped at Caramel, one of their favorite coffee shops, to discuss their interview with Greever Johnson. They sat at an outdoor table with the little tilted umbrella over top to enjoy their drinks and determine more about Ramon’s suspicious boss.

“I know Greever was angry enough to get into a fight with Ramon, but do you really think he killed him over a ruined load of fancy melons?” Ruby asked.

“I don’t know. What do men usually get angry enough to commit murder over?”

“Money, women, and money, and women. Sometimes pride, but that usually can be traced right back to either money or a woman.” Ruby shrugged.

“Maybe it was a woman. Greever lost thousands on the load of melons, but you know as well as I do that he probably made that back plus whatever the truck breakdown cost within a few loads of some other goods. I’m just not sure he would’ve killed a man over a few thousand dollars.”

Ruby nodded. “Especially when Ramon did eventually show back up to work. Greever could’ve put him back to work and taken the loss out of his pay, if nothing else.”

“But they fought instead,” Melody said, thinking about the logic of the situation. Was there any logic there? Of course, two men, both a little hot-headed and aggressive by nature, maybe that’s just where it led when they were face to face again.

“Oh, my, my, my,” Ruby said, pulling her sunglasses to the end of her nose and nodding toward the street. “Look who just drove into my life.”

Melody turned to see Sly Carrera sauntering toward them with all the confidence of a mountain lion, but she thought without the dignity of the big cat. Even they wouldn’t give her the creepy-crawlies the way he did. She rolled her eyes behind her own sunglasses, and turned to put her full attention on Boochy as Sly sat at their table without asking.

As if he’s welcome wherever he goes, Melody thought, clamping her mouth tight to keep from snarking at him. It was better not to engage him in any way, she had found.

Ignore him, and maybe he’ll go away quickly, she thought.

Ruby had always thought Sly was just the handsomest man in the world. Devastatingly handsome, was how she’d put it on more than one occasion, which caused Melody to cringe. Looks and money weren’t everything, but they sure can glaze over a lot of flaws, she’d noticed.

“Hello, handsome. Sure, sit right down and make yourself comfy, honey,” Ruby said in a saccharine tone that made Melody want to shake her.

“Why, thank you. I don’t mind at all to share a few moments with two delightful and beautiful women,” he said, looking pointedly at Melody.

Ruby giggled, and Melody bristled as she looked up at him. Her creep radar was going off like Fourth of July fireworks, and she had trouble sitting still.

“So, which lovely lady wants to share with Uncle Sly today?” He grinned, and Melody imagined him taking a chunk out of someone with that carnivorous smile.
