Chapter Six

Eli knew he shouldn’t have gone to work. How would he focus while thinking about what Solomon had up his sleeve? He’d warned his brother to stay away from Natalie yet he found text messages from him requesting to meet her. And another thing that concerned him was how Natalie had kept those communications with Solomon a secret. Then she met up with Solomon and lied about it. That’s what really angered him. Maybe she didn’t want to bother him with it. Or perhaps she didn’t trust him and wanted to see what Solomon had to say. Whatever the case, he’d find out all he needed to know when he had a chance to listen to the recording. That’s the real reason he took his laptop to work.

“You’ve been pretty quiet today,” Gary said. He’d been driving the patrol car, and besides a few accidents and speeding tickets, the day had been fairly calm. “Everything all right?”

“Yeah, man. I’m just beat. Got a lot on my mind these days.”

“I can only imagine. That’s why I refuse to get married.” Gary laughed. “You’re a good one.”

Eli smirked and silently shook his head, staring out the window, watching as street lights illuminated the city sidewalks.

“I understand, though,” Gary said glancing over at Eli. “If I came across a pretty, young thang like that, I might scoop her up, too. That sister of hers…she’s single, ain’t she?”

“She is, but I don’t think she’s looking.”

“I ain’t looking either. I don’t need to get married, anyway. Marriage ain’t for everybody.”

“Marriage is good when you’re married to the woman who completes you in every way possible.”

“And you’re married to that woman?”

“I am. Natalie is…she’s everything. Just the thought of her makes my soul happy.”

“I heard that.”

“Now trying to find a house, on the other hand, is a pain. Well not even that…it’s just time consuming looking at all these houses, hoping they have potential, but not turning out to be what we want, you know.”

“Why not keep the house you got? Natalie doesn’t like it?”

“No, I don’t like it.”

“Oh.”

“I wanted us to choose a home together, anyway.”

Gary nodded.

“Hey, I should let you know I asked the captain for a first-shift position. With me being married and all, I have to do what’s best for my wife, and I don’t like the idea of her being home alone at night.”

“That’s understandable.”

Eli looked at Gary. “You don’t seem upset about it.”

“That’s because I saw it coming. Actually, I didn’t think you would make it back on the force at all.”

“Why’s that?”

“Well, when I ran into you at the restaurant, you didn’t know if you were coming back or not, remember? Seemed you were undecided.”

“I was. My wife has been through a lot, you know, especially with her father being killed in this line of work and my injuries. I didn’t want to come back…still hate that I came back.”

“Man, Eli…real talk…I don’t know if I would’ve come back if I’d gotten shot in the face. How do you bounce back from that?”

Eli stared out the window, recalling flashes from his past.
