PART III

KINGDOM BUSINESS

11

Trader and Property Investor

Remember in Part I, I highlighted the word Kingdom to capture all aspects of God’s purposes on earth, His ways, priorities, and plans? Our starting point for looking at Kingdom business in Part III can be this parable Jesus told to illustrate what the Kingdom of God is like. Jesus used business language, or business typology, to illustrate the purposes of God and His ways in this story.

Mathew 13.45. Again, the Kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

A merchant, a businessman, or businesswoman knows the value in something they trade-in and the value of a commodity. They know the cost, margin, and sale price—it’s logical.

An experienced businessperson has seen many transactions and therefore knows when something is of high value.

The Gospel says that the Kingdom of heaven is like a trader who bought and sold exquisite pearls . The trader knew the value of pearls generally but could see that this pearl was very precious when he looked at it. The measure of the value was that he was willing to sell everything to acquire it.

This verse can have various interpretations but the one that stood out to me is that you and I are the precious, rare, unique, and exquisite pearl. God, in the form of Jesus, chose to give up everything, his position in heaven and then his earthly body, to purchase us.

Jesus, the logical, rational trader, and businessman knowing the value, the cost, the risk, and the return, decided to acquire you and me. You are worth giving up heaven and earth for. Saving us from sin and its consequences and securing a relationship with us that will last for eternity is so worth it!

In the parable while the merchant is looking for fine pearls, he is actively searching and hunting out the precious pearl.

So, it is with Jesus, searching for us.

Earlier in verse 44, Jesus said the Kingdom of heaven is like someone buying a property because they discovered a treasure in it. Again, the same theme, they sold everything to acquire the treasure.

Mathew 13.44. The Kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field .

You and I are a precious treasure. God was willing to give up everything to acquire our souls. The creator of the universe gave up everything to come to earth. We have been purchased and bought by the blood of Jesus.

These two parables are about cost and value. About acquiring something precious.

In both cases the deal was so compelling and worth giving everything up for. The Kingdom of heaven is like two business transactions: 1) Pearl harvesting & trading and 2) treasure hunting & property investing.

Know today that you are valuable. Know that the greatest logical, rational, and considered businessman in the universe gave everything to acquire you.
