Chapter 24
Even without Julesâs help, we wouldâve gotten around to interviewing Dawson Hunter sooner or later. After all, he was seen arguing with Hawk the night of the party. But now that we knew Dawson and Hawk had a previous relationship and that Dawson knew about Hawkâs lucrative fake ID business, we had even more of a reason to want to question him.
So the next morning, we had Sweets drop us off on campus a little early so we could track down Dawson Hunter before classes started. Our plan was to ask him questions and then use Albaâs rudimentary skill in mind reading to, at the very least, tell us if he was being honest or not.
As we approached the Warner Hall lobby, Jax eyed the building carefully. âYou donât think weâll get in trouble for being on the wizardsâ side of campus without permission, do you?â
âI donât know why we would,â said Holly. âItâs not like weâre sneaking up to his room or anything. Weâre just waiting in the lobby for him to come downstairs.â
âBut you never know. The new headmaster of the wizard school might not allow women in the menâs dorm. When Uncle Merrick was the headmaster here, he didnât like it,â said Jax.
I pulled back the big heavy door and led us inside. Warner Hall looked a lot like Winston Hall, except their buildingâs lobby wasnât kept quite as neat and tidy as the girlsâ lobby. The smell of dirty gym socks and stale coffee wafted around me, making me thankful once again that I wasnât living in a dorm this year. There were a handful of men wandering around, but otherwise the atmosphere was pretty low-key. There was still plenty of time before classes started, so no one seemed to be in a rush to get anywhere yet.
I heard the tapping sound of footsteps coming down the wide curving stone staircase that led up to the dorms. âLook, if the new headmaster wants to kick us out he can, butââ Standing just inside the front door, my words disintegrated into thin air when I realized the person coming down the stairs just happened to be none other than Houston Brooks.
When he got to the bottom of the steps, our eyes met and he froze for a split second before continuing to walk towards the front door.
The girls all looked at me expectantly. I didnât know what to do. Hugh had asked for space, but now I felt weird not even venturing a hello. âUmm, girls, can I have a minute?â I whispered.
âNo way, Red,â said Alba immediately. âWeâve got work to do. We donât have time for this.â
âAlba!â hissed Jax. She rolled her eyes ostentatiously at Alba and then turned to grin at me. âOf course you can, Mercy. You two just take your time.â She grabbed hold of Albaâs wrist and pulled her towards the set of couches in the lobby. Holly trailed behind them, leaving me alone as Hugh approached.
My mouth went dry. âHey, Hugh.
