Chapter 24

Even without Jules’s help, we would’ve gotten around to interviewing Dawson Hunter sooner or later. After all, he was seen arguing with Hawk the night of the party. But now that we knew Dawson and Hawk had a previous relationship and that Dawson knew about Hawk’s lucrative fake ID business, we had even more of a reason to want to question him.

So the next morning, we had Sweets drop us off on campus a little early so we could track down Dawson Hunter before classes started. Our plan was to ask him questions and then use Alba’s rudimentary skill in mind reading to, at the very least, tell us if he was being honest or not.

As we approached the Warner Hall lobby, Jax eyed the building carefully. “You don’t think we’ll get in trouble for being on the wizards’ side of campus without permission, do you?”

“I don’t know why we would,” said Holly. “It’s not like we’re sneaking up to his room or anything. We’re just waiting in the lobby for him to come downstairs.”

“But you never know. The new headmaster of the wizard school might not allow women in the men’s dorm. When Uncle Merrick was the headmaster here, he didn’t like it,” said Jax.

I pulled back the big heavy door and led us inside. Warner Hall looked a lot like Winston Hall, except their building’s lobby wasn’t kept quite as neat and tidy as the girls’ lobby. The smell of dirty gym socks and stale coffee wafted around me, making me thankful once again that I wasn’t living in a dorm this year. There were a handful of men wandering around, but otherwise the atmosphere was pretty low-key. There was still plenty of time before classes started, so no one seemed to be in a rush to get anywhere yet.

I heard the tapping sound of footsteps coming down the wide curving stone staircase that led up to the dorms. “Look, if the new headmaster wants to kick us out he can, but—” Standing just inside the front door, my words disintegrated into thin air when I realized the person coming down the stairs just happened to be none other than Houston Brooks.

When he got to the bottom of the steps, our eyes met and he froze for a split second before continuing to walk towards the front door.

The girls all looked at me expectantly. I didn’t know what to do. Hugh had asked for space, but now I felt weird not even venturing a hello. “Umm, girls, can I have a minute?” I whispered.

“No way, Red,” said Alba immediately. “We’ve got work to do. We don’t have time for this.”

“Alba!” hissed Jax. She rolled her eyes ostentatiously at Alba and then turned to grin at me. “Of course you can, Mercy. You two just take your time.” She grabbed hold of Alba’s wrist and pulled her towards the set of couches in the lobby. Holly trailed behind them, leaving me alone as Hugh approached.

My mouth went dry. “Hey, Hugh.
