I stood in front of the bedroom mirror, clean and wearing a beautiful white dress that stopped right above my ankles. The sleeves and blouse were vaguely of a gypsy cut, while the skirt portion swayed with the slightest movement.

Standing behind me was Ryker, wearing the armor of a fierce Xeki warrior.

He had explained to me that we would walk through the village to be seen by all. It was a Xeki tradition; since a coupling could result in a powerful fated bond that nobody was allowed to challenge, the change had to be witnessed by the tribe.

“This doesn’t mean we’ll have to do it in front of everyone, right?” I asked, watching Ryker through the mirror as he towered over me, his hands on my small shoulders.

Ryker chuckled at the question. “No. The tribe must simply witness the change, before and after. When a Xeki male finds his fated mate, his stripes become more vibrant, not dull like my markings are now. It’s unmistakable, but it needs to be witnessed, acknowledged.”

“What if we aren’t… fated?” I almost didn’t want to know.

He looked away. “It happens, and it will be a great disappointment. Lesser males are even embarrassed by it. I won’t be embarrassed by what is to be fated though. I trust what is to come.” He turned me away from the mirror then kissed my forehead. “Ready?” he asked, taking my hand in his.

If this was what it would take to have him inside of me, then hell yes. I nodded firmly.

For the first time in days, I walked out of Ryker’s castle quarters, his hand on the small of my back. I gazed up in awe at the cathedral-like walls that led in and out of Ryker’s living space. I had been unconscious when I was first brought here, so leaving now, I realized that Ryker had an entire wing of the king’s castle to himself.

Eventually we reached the main castle hall, then headed out of its grand doors. The weather was notably amazing. The suns were shining, but it was a little cold too. We made our way down the mountain that the castle was positioned on, reaching the village down below.

Walking on the dirt path, I felt everyone’s gaze on us. Kids would stop their playing to gasp, men would look at Ryker and nod, and the women simply smiled at me. The path forked at one point, and I hesitated, unsure which way we were going. My slowed pace caused Ryker to brush against me from behind, and I felt just how long and hard he was.

The wet folds between my legs shuddered. That would be inside me by the time we were done with this.

And it couldn’t happen soon enough…
