Chapter Seventeen

Remus

THE SCENT OF BLOOD filled the air, and it took everything Remus had not to shift into his wolf and start tearing into the brambles and thorns with claws and fangs.

He was frozen by the fear pulsing inside of him, praying to Faerie to release her. If she didn’t, he’d shatter. They all would.

This wasn’t something any of them would come back from.

They all bled from trying to fight the blasted circle that refused to let them inside to the woman who was everything to them.

He knew they should’ve done further research first.

This was unprecedented. All of it.

They were in completely new and foreign territory and that was not a place Remus felt comfortable. He liked knowing and understanding things. Something he and Ginevra had in common. He was just a little more stringent about it.

But she’d leapt headfirst into this new plan, letting her gut guide her instead of her brain, and now he was terrified they were losing her while they stood back, useless and weak.

They were supposed to protect her, but how did they do that when she was unlike anything ever created before? She was Faerie’s daughter more than anything else. She was always going to be at risk.

And then she started singing. So beautiful and pure and perfect. Her voice carried by the wind, nearby birds chirping along with the melody of a sad rock song of all things.

Remus held his breath, putting all his effort into listening, the magic in her song giving him slight tendrils of hope in his chest.

The ring unwound itself, returning to the crown of brambles and roses on the ground.

They rushed towards her as one, but they still couldn’t reach her, an invisible force in between them they slammed into, all five of them landing on their asses in the dirt.

Fuck.

Faerie couldn’t have her.

As soon as they could get to her, Remus was scooping her up, and they were leaving. He’d had enough.

They made a mistake coming back here and thrusting her into this life, this war.

She kept singing, not sparing them a glance as she faced the trees that seemed to be in some kind of communication with her, her arms spread open and wide like she was ready to receive whatever Faerie had for her, like she was ready to embrace the pain heading her way like an old friend.

And for her, pain was an old friend.

But she shouldn’t have to continue on like this.

She shouldn’t have to stand out there alone.

They should’ve insisted on joining her in the ring, letting it pull their power too.

“Chill out. Lower your walls.” Blaze shoved him.

Remus frowned at the other half of his heart, blinking in confusion. “What?”

“Lower your fucking walls, Remus. Now.”

Worried, Remus didn’t argue with Blaze and dropped the barrier between himself and Ginevra.

And what he felt almost knocked him right back into the dirt, his heart thudding, his eyes wide, his hands clenched into fists at his sides.

He felt everything.

It was overwhelming. It was terrifying. It was humbling.
